A WORD ABOUT PRODUCTION, PURCHASING AND DISTRIBUTION OF MY MUSICAL WORK

For many years, my computer-aided music production involved MIDI sequencing (using Opcode's Vision software) which controlled the audio output (16 bit) of various synths and sound modules. These renderings were then recorded, first on cassette tape, and eventually onto CD. But the technology of digital music has improved immensly over the last several years and I have kept my studio up to date. My music sequencing is now handled by Logic Pro 7, Apple's integrated MIDI & audio software, which handles the new generation of soft-synth plug-ins, i. e., hard drive based audio samples that produce remarkably realistic instrumental sounds when sequenced into Logic Pro's tracks. Consequently, my old 16 bit external synth modules have been rendered practically obsolete.

Also, modes of transmission of musical product are undergoing dramatic transformation. Cassette tapes are now a thing of the past, except as a source of archival material. I now distribute finished work through shipped CD's or through data download via the internet (mailed hard-copy sheet music or downloadable .pdf's in the case of engraving work). For downloading, I will provide a web site URL from which customers can obtain demonstration or purchased material almost instantaneously.

So, depending on the client request, completed projects can be delivered as:

  • Recorded CD's
  • Downloadable .mp3's, .wav's, .mids or .aiff's
  • Fully engraved scores & lead sheets, publication quality, sent by post or by downloadable .pdf's.

FEES AND PAYMENT METHODS FOR SERVICES

Any musical sevice requested of me would provided on the basis of a negotiated fee (agreed upon by email communication or telephone contact) that covers the labor involved in making a quality musical product, whether it involve arranging, original composition, or music notation work. I calculate my fees based on a general labor fee of $25/hr. Obviously, different types of musical work will require different amounts of time to produce (for example, arranging and ear transcriptions are the most labor-intensive) and so final costs would be arrived at by estimate. I do discount my labor charges if the project is substantial enough, and I offer customers demonstrational samples of their requested work free of charge ('on spec').

The exception to this fee structure is for my musical, ALICE IN WONDERLAND, which is a ready-made product whose prices are stated on my ALICE PAGE.

Payment for all services must be by personal check or money order or by PayPal c/o my email address. For larger projects I can work out a 'pay as we go scheme' whereby payment and delivery of the music is incrementally obtained. But for small or average sized projects, once an agreement is entered upon, I will complete the work and release it to the customer upon receipt of the customer's check or money order. I will consider partial release of work to establish client confidence, if the client requires it. Details of these transactions will vary from customer to customer and will be worked out between us through our communications.
